5 Steps To Take To Prepare Your Car For Winter With Land Rover North Haven

November 3rd, 2021 by

Winter is just around the corner so it’s time that you start preparing your vehicle for the hazardous conditions of the upcoming season. We’ve prepared a practical checklist to get you started:

Check Your Tire Treads

It’s important to have good traction on your tires during the harsh winter conditions such as snow, ice, and sleet. Tires that are worn have an increased stopping distance and a decreased stability. To easily check your tire tread, perform a penny test. Take a penny with Abraham Lincoln’s head facing down and stick it into the tread of your tire. If part of Lincoln’s head is covered, your tires are still in good shape. If Lincoln’s head is entirely visible then you should replace them. For best traction in the winter, your tires should be 5/32”. If your tires are less than 2/32” then they should also be replaced regardless of the time of year, as they offer virtually no traction. Consider buying snow tires if you live in an area that experiences heavy snowfall during the winter months.

Check Your Tire Pressure

Tire pressure decreases 1 PSI (pounds per square inch) for every 10℉ the air temperature drops. Low tire pressure can potentially be dangerous on winter roads, so make sure to regularly check your tire pressure. For your tires recommended PSI, check the owner’s manual. If you don’t have your own air compressor, free air pumps can be found at your local gas station.

Change Your Oil

Although it’s important to regularly get your oil changed, it’s especially important in the winter because when the temperatures drop it can cause your oil to thicken and flow slower. This can put a lot of stress on your engine and eventually your motor will start to have problems.

Check Your Battery

More power is required in the winter when the temperatures are colder to start your vehicle’s engine. Make sure to get your battery tested and that it’s in good condition to avoid a car that won’t start on a cold morning. Also check the battery cables and terminals for cracks.

Emergency Kit

Be prepared for the unexpected because the winter may take you by surprise and put you in a dangerous situation. It’s a good idea to have an emergency kit equipped with a first aid kit, shovel, flashlight, ice scraper/snow brush, blankets, bottled water, nonperishable food, flares, multi-tool (Leatherman or Swiss army knife) and jumper cables.
